Pine tar soap is considered one of the most effective soaps for skin conditions. It is widely know to help with scaling caused by psoriasis by slowing the buildup of skin that forms the scales. The tar helps balance skin and because of it's anti-inflammatory properties, it is a great choice for eczema, dermatitis, seborrhea, hives & insect bites. It can also dry rashes from poison ivy, poison oak & poison sumac. We use a very therapeutic 20.15% pine tar in our soap, much more than several commercial body washes contain that have pine tar in them. You will notice a difference in the dry skin with the first use. Generally, you can expect to see lasting results within two weeks.
One of the greatest concerns with using pine tar soap is the smell. Some people enjoy it and say it has a pleasant woodsy fragrance, while others (like myself) find it to be harsh and acrid. The scent doesn't usually stay on the skin, and most people don't mind the temporary fragrance, as opposed to the itchy irritated scaly skin.
